What are your options for wireless data?

Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it will end its $30 monthly unlimited wireless-data plan for new two-year contracts. Tomorrow, Verizon joins AT&T in the move to tiered data plans. (Note that current Verizon customer with an existing unlimited plan won’t have to change plans.)

So if you’re shopping for a new smart phone or tablet computer, what will be your choices? How much will you have to shell out for data at Verizon or any of the other major U.S.

Low CD rates prompt consumers to pay off credit cards

A certificate of deposit is traditionally a worthwhile, low-risk investment. However, CD rates have been so low lately that many consumers have moved their money into more productive financial ventures, reports Bankrate. Paying down debt – particularly credit card debt – has taken center stage.

According to Bankrate, the current average for one-year CD rates is a miniscule 0.44 percent. The highest surveyed was 1.31 percent. Considering that credit cards typically carry an APR of 20 percent or more, a paydown is attractive. U.S. consumer credit card debt still exceeds $790 billion, despite significant shrinkage since 2004, reports the Federal Reserve. That explains why CD balances have fallen to a six-year low of $839.2 billion.

What your area code says about your business

The choice of area code carries more weight in consumer perception than zip code, according to more than 70 percent of small companies polled in a survey conducted by communications and messaging service company j2 Global Communications Inc.

Nearly the same percentage of business owners said having the right phone number gives them a competitive edge.

“Reinforcing that you’re the right person to be working with, building that credibility is the most important thing (owners) have in building a small business,” said Mike Pugh, j2s vice president of marketing communications, adding that a San Francisco area code was more likely to be seen as optimal for tech startups, while a Detroit number would be preferable for someone in the automotive industry.

“They really just have the impression they can make,” Pugh said, noting small businesses with 800 numbers and preferred area codes said they are more likely to project an image of greater scale and prestige to their customers. “Having t
