Federal checks could begin flowing again as early as next week to millions of jobless people who lost up to seven weeks of unemployment benefits in a congressional standoff.
President Obama quickly signed the legislation Congress approved Thursday to restore benefits to people who have been out of work for six months or more.
New York State Labor Department Spokesman Leo Rosales said Congress’ action affects nearly 200,000 New Yorkers who qualify for extended unemployment benefits but have been in limbo since the federal authorization expired June 2.
The state hopes to begin mailing lump-sum back payments to enrollees as early as next week.
The bill also allows New York to continue providing extended unemployment benefits – to a maximum of 93 weeks per recipient – through Dec. 5. The state’s average weekly unemployment payment is $330.
