Bing launches social shopping list

Posted by Thomas Taylor in Finance News

Bing, Microsoft’s young search engine, launched a new feature for its shopping tool that allows users to add products to an online list and share with friends. Availability of the tool begins today and it will be fully available in the U.S. in coming days, according to Bing.

“Now you can enlist the help of your favorite gadget geek,” says a Bing demo page, or “give your friends and family a nudge by publishing a wish-list to your Facebook Wall.” Once you add items from Bing to your shopping list, you can share the list with Facebook friends to get their opinionsor into their heads. The Wall Street Journal notes that the tool does not allow you to share gift lists with only some friends, or create multiple lists. But a spokesperson told the Journal that those features are on the company’s to-do list for next year.

How does Bing compare to other shopping sites?

We recently tested the 25 top shopping sites, and Bing’s shopping tool was one of our runners-up, along with Google and NexTag. It worked well, and we liked the ease of finding free-shipping deals, but were disappointed that it ended it’s cash-back program. Shopping.com and Pronto both had some irrelevant search results and finished at the bottom. Nothing matched PriceGrabber.com for shopping ease and deal-finding. We found the lowest prices for six of the eight items on our list there, and the site calculates tax and shipping using your ZIP code. And if you don’t see a price you like, you can add a “Price Alert.”
